Practicing sustainability revolves around our choices and actions.  By mindfully choosing specific ingredients and materials, and partnering with select vendors, we hope to be able to do our part for the environment and promote positive change.

Simple, Green Ingredients

We are passionate about people and our planet. That is the reason why we are extremely selective about each ingredient that goes into our candles. Our philosophy is to keep things simple and green. Our candle wax is made of 100% soy wax which is biodegradable and a sustainable resource. Our candles do not contain petrochemicals, dyes, pesticides, herbicides, inhibitors, enhancers, preservatives, or harmful metals.

Recycled and Recyclable Packaging

We believe that you don't have to sacrifice beautiful design and clean lines to be green; design becomes even more beautiful when it is green. Our vessels are made of recycled glass manufactured with wind-powered machinery. Each candle is individually wrapped in soft, chocolate-brown tissue made with 100% recycled paper. While the metal bottoms and lids of our packaging are fully recyclable, the  body of our packaging is composed of up to 95% post-consumer paper, and is fully recyclable, compostable and biodegradable. Our glass vessels and beautiful packaging can be reused over and over.

Eco-friendly Shipping

To further reinforce our commitment to sustainability, we offset our carbon footprint by partnering with UPS, a courier that offers carbon neutral shipping.

We also use biodegradable, water-soluble corn starch peanuts when packing and shipping orders.  They are safe for the environment compared to the common petroleum-based polystyrene (Styrofoam) peanuts. A 1986 Environmental Protection Agency report listed polystyrene manufacturing process as the 5th largest creator of hazardous waste. The process of making polystyrene peanuts pollutes the air and creates large amounts of waste that leaches toxins into our air, land and oceans.

Vegan and Cruelty-Free

We have compassion for animals and all living things.  None of our ingredients or finished products are ever tested on animals, nor do they contain animal by-products.

We believe that every action – small or large - creates an impact in our community and globally. The Makana ohana supports organizations involved in environmental, humanitarian and animal welfare causes.  Volunteerism and activism has always been an integral part of our business. We are active participants in our community and donate a portion of our sales to organizations such as the Earth Island Institute, the American Cancer Society, the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, the House Rabbit Society, Born Free USA and others. By doing our part and paying it forward, we hope to support the cycle of sustainability and promote healthy, harmonious living with our world and all its inhabitants.
